Conservative Freshmen Congressmen would Raise the Debt Ceiling – but Only for Real Fiscal Reform

On Sunday freshmen legislators Rep. Mia Love (R-UT), Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) were all on ABC’s This Week with Martha Raddatz to discuss a wide range of issues.

One interesting point they made was that they wouldn’t mind raising the debt ceiling… but only if that came along with some other MAJOR fiscal reforms.

Martha Raddatz: Will you support raising the debt ceiling when it comes up in spring?

Ben Sasse: Obviously a country that functions needs to pay its bills. But we need to have a long-term conversation about actually dealing with all the structural insolvency in our entitlement programs. The debt ceiling is less than a quarter of the real problem.

The unfunded obligations in our entitlement programs are three and four times —

Raddatz: So it sounds like you would vote for it.

Sasse: As a part of a down payment on a long-term reform, absolutely.
