The leaders of the largest Christian University in the world, Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia did Jeb Bush a big favor when they asked him to give the 2015 commencement address. Liberty is the flagship university of the Southern Baptist Convention, and it has become the most influential conservative college in America. With tens of thousands of Americans matriculating through the school, Liberty’s reach has grown exponentially in recent years, and their endorsement, whether explicitly or tacitly, means a great deal in conservative and Christian circles.
Jeb Bush has had a problem connecting with conservatives and with evangelicals, and being asked to speak at LU this year gave him the perfect opportunity to rub shoulders with the conservative hoi polloi. The question is, ‘will it be enough’?
