Gay Ban to be Lifted

AP is reporting that there is a move within the FDA to lift the lifetime ban on blood donations from gay men. The FDA placed the ban on these donations in 1983. It was what seemed a necessary step in the prevention of the spread of the virus. Now health officials and gay activists alike are claiming the ban is outdated and of little use.
They have come to this conclusions based on two clear facts.
First, and the most important is that the blood is screened for the virus. All blood is screened, and if the virus is present, it will be detected. Only blood infected less than ten days before screening is dangerous.
The second fact is that most gay men donate anyway. They simply lie about being gay. It is a simple thing to lie as to whether or not you have had sexual relations with another man. So the ban does not stop gay men from donating.
Gay rights activist claim that the ban places a stigma on gay men. They claim it is discriminatory for the government to disallow them from donating blood. They do not feel that the switch in policy is a step in the right direction. The FDA still wants to restrict donations to those who have been sexually inactive for a year.
Gay Activists claim that the new policy is just as discriminatory as the old. AP’s Matthew Perrone reports:
“This new policy does not require heterosexual blood donors to be celibate for one year. Some may believe this is a step forward, but in reality, requiring celibacy for a year is a de facto lifetime ban,” Gay Men’s Health Crisis, a New York-based nonprofit that supports AIDS prevention and care, said after the announcement.
And: “This new policy cannot be justified in light of current scientific research and updated blood screening technology,” said David Stacy of Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. gay rights group.
The problem with these statements is the facts. The facts are that the numbers do not lie concerning the issue of HIV. It is not true that the ban itself is not justified by science. Though it is true that you can contract HIV through promiscuous sex of any kind, we can show that it is the gay male who is the most promiscuous.
Though only 2% of the American Populous are men who have had sexual relations with other men. That small number of men make up 62 percent of all new cases in the U.S. This means that though they are almost an unmeasurable number of the population, they are the majority of the newly contracted HIV patients.
No justification at all? I for one hope that this measure is not adopted, or this policy changed. Because if it is, there is the danger of another outbreak. But this is not the worst part. It is the idea that we have to endanger our blood supply to save people from having their feelings hurt.
I Guess the old saying is true: you just can’t teach stupid.
